Sara: Gossip Failure

Hey, aren't churches supposed to be hotbeds of gossip? I am shocked ~shocked~ by how many people haven't heard about my recent drama. Clearly we just do not have a functioning snarkage committee - what could be more fun than speculating on a cancelled wedding? or else my life just isn't all that interesting, but I refuse to contemplate that possibility

I was at the parish dinner last night for the first time since everything went down, and I went up to get some soup and the woman who was serving - who is a very plugged-in person, on the vestry, etc. - started asking how the wedding frenzy was going, was everyone still speaking to everyone else, etc. I started to say something, but then I noticed something out of the corner of my eye - which was the Rector's wife, jumping up and down behind me and making throat-cutting gestures at the other woman to get her to shut up. It was hilarious.

I could tell that she felt like a total clod at that point, but I think she eventually believed me when I said that it wasn't a big deal. I was laughing pretty hard. Seriously, I really thought that if I told a few key people, the word would just spread because it's pretty juicy gossip, but I guess we don't do that here. So I can look forward to more awkward moments now that I've resurfaced. Must practice looking tragic. Ok, not really. I'm weirdly nervous about going to church on Sunday. We haven't been to services since we called the wedding off, and I know Dennis will be feeling self-conscious and I'm sure I will be also. Must get over myself.
